Engagement rate is interactions divided by an audience, as a percentage. The two common versions divide by different things: by followers, which is easy to compare between accounts, and by reach, which says how the people who actually saw the post responded.

Rate by reach is the fairer number for your own posts, because it doesn't punish a post Instagram showed to few people. Rate by followers is what brands usually ask for, because they can work it out from your public profile.

Compare a post with your own recent posts rather than with a benchmark. Rates vary a lot by niche, account size and format, and a published average rarely matches your situation.

The formulas

By followers
(likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers × 100
By reach
(likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ reach × 100
Over several posts
Total interactions ÷ posts, then ÷ followers × 100

Questions about engagement rate calculator

Anything else, write to support@cuedm.com.

Where do I find saves, shares and reach?
On a professional account, open the post and tap View insights. Likes and comments are public; saves, shares and reach are only visible to you.
Should comments count more than likes?
Some people weight them, but there is no standard weighting, so a weighted rate can't be compared with anyone else's. This calculator counts every interaction once.
Does a comment-to-DM campaign raise engagement?
It raises comments, because the keyword is a comment, and comments are part of the rate. Judge the campaign by what happened after the DM too: clicks, sign-ups and sales.
